Sydney's Story

Sydney: the picture of health, thanks to someone’s caring

Gift of Life!

On February 13, 2003 Sydney was born by emergency caesarian section. She had completely stopped moving. At the time of delivery she was given a blood transfusion to save her life. She was diagnosed with fetomaternal hemorrhage. Later that day she was given more blood in another transfusion lasting over 3 hours. Sydney is blood type “A” positive. “Without blood on the hospital shelf, it would have been a very different outcome,” said Donna, Sydney ’s mother. “We are very grateful to those who donate.” Sydney is now a very healthy and active 2 year old.

Sydney ’s is just one story of the thousands of lives who are touched each day by through the caring gifts of strangers. For this month, in our region alone, over 7000 people will be needed to present at blood drives or donor centers to help meet transfusion needs of patients in our hospitals. Family members, friends, neighbors, classmates and associates could all become blood or platelet recipients at some point in their lives.

Every donor and every donation is vital to providing quality medical care in our community. Accident victims, those suffering from serious illnesses, cancer and surgery patients, all count on life sustaining treatments that may well require blood products. Yet, each day it becomes increasingly more difficult to recruit enough donors and insure a stable supply.

You can help….

Share your story.

If you or a loved one ever received transfusions share your story with others. Sydney’s story on flyers, posters and e-mail has helped publicize blood drives and motivate people to donate. Donna, Sydney’s mom, participates at blood drives as a volunteer, sharing Sydney ’s story and thanking donors for making the time and effort to share their precious gift.

Help create awareness of the daily need for more blood donors…. Put a face on it.

Sponsor a blood drive.

Each day blood drives are hosted by churches, schools, businesses and community groups. Find out how easy it is for your favorite organizations to be a part of your community’s “life support team” by participating as a blood drive or donor center sponsor.

Donate regularly.

Don’t wait for an “emergency”. Every day families in our community are faced with there own emergency when loved ones require critical care to survive illness or trauma situations. As Sydney ’s mom said, “Without blood on the hospital shelf, it would have been a very different outcome”. Blood and platelets must be there when needed; lives depend on it.

Sydney is here because someone cared.

Help us, help others by calling 1 800 GIVE LIFE or 1 866-1030 (platelet donations).

Together, we can save a life
