Hospitals
The Indiana-Ohio Region of American Red Cross Blood Services supplies blood to over 60 hospitals throughout the region. Red Cross staff work 24 hours a day, seven days a week to be sure that hospitals have the blood products they need. Special Services Available to Our Hospital Customers Reference Laboratory The American Red Cross has access to a national registry of rare blood donors and maintains a frozen supply of rare blood available for immediate shipment around the world. Rare blood types are frozen and can be for up to 10 years. The Red Cross also maintains a system of National Reference Laboratories to help physicians resolve complex serological problems and identify rare blood. Hospital blood bank technologists call the Red Cross daily to resolve blood typing issues and transfuse their patients safely. Someone is on-call 24 hours a day to find a matching rare donor if needed. To contact the Reference Laboratory, please call (260) 480-8272.
