Practice Guidelines for a Blood Transfusion: A Compilation from Recent Peer-Reviewed Literature
The booklet, Practice Guidelines for Blood Transfusion: A Compilation from Recent Peer-Reviewed Literature, is a composite of current blood usage guidelines from experts and expert panels. These practice guidelines for blood transfusion have been developed at the direct request of our customers to Red Cross Medical Directors and Regional Account Managers. It contains information from the results of significant clinical transfusion trials published in peer-reviewed journals since 1991. This booklet is designed to be a resource to the physician, nursing and laboratory staff of hospitals as they develop and update their blood usage guidelines for the purpose of improving transfusion safety.

The pamphlet contains general information on red blood cells, platelets, fresh frozen plasma, and cryoprecipitate (e.g., component, description of component, selection and preparation, dosing, response, indications and contraindications), utilization guidelines in different settings for red blood cells, platelets, fresh frozen plasma, and cryoprecipitate (e.g., perioperative, oncology, critical care, and hematology), the suggested role of a typical hospital transfusion committee, a complete list of all references used to compile these guidelines, and an appendix containing side effects and hazards of blood transfusion.

This publication is not intended to replace the Circular of Information (COI).
