Volunteers are the Heart of the American Red CrossSuccess of Red Cross programs is due largely to its corps of volunteers. The Red Cross has many ways to volunteer and is eager to put your talents to work. Volunteers offer their time and energy to help make our community safer. You can help people to help themselves. Below is a list of some of our volunteer positions. If you would like more information on any of these positions, please call the appropriate number listed below. Disaster Volunteer In times of disaster, the American Red Cross provides immediate assistance to victims and their families. Our highly trained disaster volunteers provide food, clothing, shelter and medical assistance, as well as emotional support and counseling. You can help by becoming trained as a local disaster volunteer or by joining our national team of disaster workers. Registered nurses and trained mental health workers are especially needed at this time. If you would like more information or a copy of our Disaster Volunteer Training Schedule, please call our Disaster Director or Assistant Disaster Director at (831) 424-4824 in Salinas or from Monterey (831) 375-5730. CPR & First Aid Instructor The Red Cross needs bright, enthusiastic and caring people to teach CPR, first aid, babysitting and youth courses. The Red Cross will provide training that will certify you to teach these Red Cross programs. Blood Drive Volunteer The American Red Cross Regional Blood Center in San Jose provides blood to 30 hospitals in five counties. Volunteers are needed to: greet donors, assist with registration, serve refreshments, drive volunteers to donation sites, assist nurses and provide clerical support. If you are available for at least one 4-hour shift per week, please call our Health & Safety Director at (831) 424-4824 in Salinas or (831) 375-5730 in Monterey. Office Volunteer Utilize your customer service, data entry, accounting, graphics or public relations skills. Volunteers assist with student registration, counter sales, data entry, filing, collating mailings, telephone inquiries or making deliveries. We ask that you commit to 3 hours per week. Health Fair Representative Represent the American Red Cross to the public at community and corporate health fairs. Staff information booth, distribute brochures and respond to inquiries about Red Cross programs. Qualifications: Strong communication skills, positive attitude, able to carry supply box, valid drivers license. Most fairs are on weekdays and last 2-4 hours. Our committees determine our direction, set policy, develop programs and plan special events. Most committees meet every one to two months. We have a variety of committees in Health and Safety Services, Disaster Services, Blood Services, Public Relations, and Fund-Raising.
