Clinical Services

Clinical Services include: therapeutic phlebotomy, medical guidance, medical safety, assistance with research and transfusion services (reference lab).

The Medical Office is staffed by Diane Eklund, MD, the Medical Director, and Anne Fischer-Smith, her Administrative Assistant.

The Medical Office provides consultative services on all aspects of blood banking and transfusion medicine to the medical community and the general public.

The Medical Director provides:

• Medical guidance regarding the region's policies and procedures.
• Assists in the assessment of donor eligibility.
• Protects donor safety and recipient safety.
• Oversees notification of deferred donors.
• Assesses information about a donor or donation that comes in following the donation.
• Investigates suspected post-transfusion infectious disease cases, lookback cases and all serious adverse reactions by donors or recipients.
• Transfusion consultation/education to physicians/hospitals and community groups.

The Medical Office also oversees the distribution of all research products.
