| Dr. George
Garratty is Scientific Director, American Red Cross Blood
Services, Los Angeles, and Clinical Professor of Pathology
at the University of California, Los Angeles. He received
his training in hematology/immunohematology in England,
at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School of London. |

His
research is mainly concerned with immune cell (red cells and platelets)
destruction. He has published more than 200 papers, is editor
of six textbooks, and is co-author of three textbooks. He has
been on several national committees, including the Standards Committee
of the American Association of Blood Banks, and is an Associate
Editor of Transfusion. In 1985 he was President of California
Blood Bank Society. He has also represented North America on the
International Society of Blood Transfusion Council.
He has received several prestigious
awards, including the Ivor Dunsford (1978), Emily Cooley (1989),
and Morten Grove-Rasmussen (1994) Memorial Awards of the American
Association of Blood Banks; the Charles R. Drew Award of the
American Red Cross (1987); and the Owen Thomas Memorial Award
of the California blood Bank System (1987); and the Outstanding
Research Award of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists
(1998).
