The American Red Cross has the best training on how to be safe in, on, and around the water. Each year the American Red Cross of Central Florida trains water safety instructors and lifeguards for area pools and lakes. The school also teaches other courses such as basic water rescue and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. Whether you want to become a lifeguard for a local pool or just create a safe environment for your own backyard, we can give you the training you need. For more information to find out which course is right for you, contact Tom Werts, Aquatics Specialist, at (407) 894-4141 extension 5663.

Lifeguard Training
If you're 15 or older and looking for a great summer job or a challenging career, one that will help you develop skills and experience that will be valued by colleges and future employers, American Red Cross Lifeguarding is the best place to start. Through classroom learning and hands-on practice, you'll learn:
  • Surveillance skills to help you recognize and prevent injuries
  • Rescue skills - in the water and on land
  • First aid training and professional rescuer CPR - to help you prepare for any emergency
  • Professional lifeguard responsibilities like interacting with the public and addressing uncooperative patrons

Water Safety Instructor
If you are at least 17-years old and a proficient swimmer, you can become an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. Whether you want to splash around with kids and teach them to swim, help children or adults refine their strokes, or teach diving safety techniques, you can do it as an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. Qualified WSIs can also help prepare swim coaches to prevent and respond to emergency situations.

Aquatic Examiner Program
The Aquatic Examiner Program reduces aquatic injuries by assisting lifeguards and aquatic facilities in developing their own procedures to prevent and minimize the effects of accidents, recognize hazards and respond effectively to emergencies. The course is designed for lifeguards, pool managers, and aquatic facility supervisors.

Basic Water Rescue
This course is designed for public safety personnel, camp staff, trip leaders, and aquatic specialists. People with a backyard pool can take this class to make sure that they provide a fun, safe environment for themselves and their families.

Learn-to-Swim Program
American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim lessons are offered at locations throughout the Central Florida area on a year 'round and seasonal basis.
