March is Red Cross Month
"Our minds should be free of traces of the past, just like the flowers of Spring."
--Shunryu Suzuki.
The American Red Cross has made a promise to the people of Hampshire County, a promise we are committed to in each and every one of the 17 communities we serve:  "We'll Be There." To those who depend on Red Cross assistance following a disaster, who rely on Red Cross blood or plasma or tissue, who turn to Red Cross for training that can save a life, who count on us for services to members of the military, who trust us to be the channel for their care and concern for our neighbors both down the street and far away in other states or other lands, we offer this assurance:  In time of need, we will be there to help.
March is our opportunity both to recognize and express our heartfelt appreciation for your assistance in the past, but it's also time to ask for your continued support.  This year with our new executive director, we have made a commitment to provide services at an unprecedented to provide services at the county.  This means we will provide new services, such as youth leadership development training; we will provide our traditional services in new ways to better meet community needs; and we will provide expanded services to reach more lives.
To achieve this goal, we must look to you for unparalleled support.  Our board of directors has already set the pace for an all-time record March campaign with 100%  participation at a level never attained before.  The promise has been the same for more than a century:  We'll be there whenever and wherever we're needed.  Plaese join us to keep our promise alive.  Join us to help make this a year of extraordinary opportunities to help those in need in our community through your generous suport.
Health & Safety Training -- Heralded & Special for March
The Chapter's Health Services is offering FREE health and safety demonstrations during Red Cross Month.  Red Cross trained instructors will be at the Hampshire Mall on March 11th, 18th, and 25th, between 10 AM and 2 PM, to demonstrate skills in Adult CPR / AED, 'Til Help Arrives, and Pet First Aid.  The Automated Eternal Defibrillator -- AED -- dramatically enhances our ability to save the lives of victims of cardiac arrest.  'Til Help Arrives teaches people what to do until emergency medical technicians arrive.  People learn about barriers to action, how to recognize an emergency scene.  Pet First Aid teaches people how to keep a cat or dog safe during an emergency, and how to recognise and monitor normal versus abnormal body functions such as heart rate, temperature, painting and appetite.  Come participate in these valuable free demonstrations!  Call Bridget Hallock at (413) 584-8887 for more information.

Disaster Team Directs Transport, Food, and Clothing Assistance
Recently the disaster team was activated twice in less than 18 hours to meet community needs.  On Feb 17th, the first call was to provide rehab to the Northampton fire department following a hazardous material spill in Leeds.  Jean Jack supplied coffee, water, and snacks.  The second call came at 7 AM on the 18th, again to support the fire department and mutual aid organizations from five surrounding communities.  Mary Snyders reponded with water, coffee, and pastry for 70 firefighters and emergency responders.  By noon with 20-25 workers still at the scene, Mike Brick joined Mary to provide a hot meal.  The Chapter assisted with transporting tired and

Exciting Initiatives Await Volunteer Leaders
Do you have leadership qualities?  Do you support meaningful options for our youth?  Have you ever wanted to work on a project from the beginning?  Do you have 5-10 hours a week?  We are building a volunteer support program to accomplish new goals. Our community disaster educaton program for the middle and high schools, Peers Educating Peers, is expanding outside the Northampton school system.  One of our new projects is the development of a Juvenile Firesetters Intervention Center for Hampshire County, a program designed to prevent repeat behavior of fire setting.  We also are poised to champion a Youth Leadership Program.  To meet these goals, we need leadership volunteers.  If you are seeking a meaningful challenge, please call Mary Snyders at (413) 584-887.

Keep the Promise with Wise Stewardship
The Red Cross has been there in times of need throughout the county, responding to fires, providing training in first aid, CPR, HIV/AIDS, water safety, babysitting, and disaster preparedness for the elderly -- making efficient use of contributions.  Over 91 cents of every dollar spent by the Red Cross goes for programs that help people in need.  And not one cent comes from taxes.  We have scored high marks for effective financial management and accountability from a variety of objective agencies.  Money magazine, for example, has consistenty rated Red Cross as one of the nation's top charities.  And the value of a donation to the Red Cross is magnified by the fact that here in Hampshire County the ratio of volunteer Red Cross workers to paid staff is 95 to 1. The vigilant stewardship of our resources helps ensure that when we're needed, we'll be there.
