ABOUT YOUR RED CROSS
Who We Are:
The Southern Maryland Chapter of the American Red Cross serves
the citizens living in Tri-County area. We are located in Southern
Maryland. Our physical boundaries are the Potomac River, and include
the Countys of Charles, Calvert and St. Mary's. The chapter is centrally
located in the county seat of La Plata.
Our original charter was issued in November 1917. Our 80 years
of continuous service have been provided by our volunteers. Red
Cross volunteers provide the leadership, strength and energy to
the chapter. It is though their efforts that we can say...
We'll Be There.
A Brief History:
World War I kept our volunteers busy sending emergency communications
to military members and their families. Volunteers from the county
were among those who assisted the victims of the 1927 Tornado. And
our Disaster Volunteers continue to assist victims of natural disasters
and single family fires. They are on call 24 hours a day. More recently,
during Hurricane Bertha and Tropical Storm Fran, disaster volunteers
opened shelters.
Blood Volunteers have supported the various public blood drives
since World War II. We have shared a long relationship with the
La Plata Lions Club in collecting this life saving gift.
Volunteer instructors offered the Learn to Swim, CPR and First
Aid courses which appeared in the 1950's. Chapel Point and Marshal
Hall were a few of the teaching sites for the then 'Swimming Program'.
Through International Services, we help to reunite families with
love ones, else where in the world, who are separated by war and
disasters.
All of these programs continue today, through the support of the
Southern Maryland citizens. The Red Cross is neighbor helping neighbor.
