Volunteer of the Week, Jan Adkins

Janice Atkins, affectionately regarded as "Jan", has been a faithful volunteer for the Calhoun County Chapter of the American Red Cross for over twelve years. Red Cross Director of Health and Safety, Angie Gresley, wholeheartedly nominated Jan for volunteer of the week saying, "Jan′s service to us is indispensable. When Jan calls my office in the morning to tell me that she has arrived at work, it brings an instant smile to my face. I know that today is going to run smoothly with Jan at the helm."
With over twelve years of service, Jan has been involved in many different volunteer capacities. Starting as a volunteer in Hospital Services, Jan gained valuable experience that would later serve her well as she moved on as a Red Cross volunteer representative in a Military Hospital. With her good–spirit and excellent service she became the Physical Therapy coordinator at the Military Hospital and ran the physical therapy clinic. Her heart to serve those who were suffering then called her to care for infants who suffered from severe hydrocephalus, commonly known as "water on the brain."
Currently, Jan provides tremendous service as a part–time Office Receptionist. Her willingness to be quick to smile and attend to office needs helps create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for our visitors.
When asked why she has she has been committed to a lifetime of service, Jan simply replied, "When you give to others you increase your own happiness." She also went on to add that the American Red Cross helped her in her personal times of need and she is glad to provide that same service and help spread the good news of the American Red Cross.
Jan′s volunteerism does not end with the Red Cross! She is glad to offer her time and compassion to a number of other worthy causes. Jan serves on the Board at her local church where she is also responsible for creating and disseminating the Volunteer Bulletin. In addition to her church service, she is also on the Board for Alacat Angels, an organization that is committed to spaying and neutering domestic cats. With whatever time is left remaining, Jan enjoys fine-tuning her craft in stained-glass making.
The American Red Cross is fortunate to share the company of Janice Atkins. She is an integral component of our organization that drives our network of service to the community. From everyone here at the Calhoun County chapter of the American Red Cross, we offer our sincerest thanks and gratitude.
