The American Red Cross Needs You!

The American Red Cross of Branch and Calhoun County is in need of volunteers to serve in various capacities. The following is a listing of positions available.

Blood Volunteers are essential to the success of area blood drives. Workers are needed to register donors, to escort them to the canteen, and to serve juice & cookies. Most blood drives are six hours long and take place at various locations in Battle Creek and surrounding areas including Marshall, Coldwater, Albion, Quincy and Tekonsha. Workers may sign up to help at as many or as few blood drives as they are able to work. Days and times vary.

Canteen Drivers are also needed. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age with a good driving record to qualify for the position. Drivers pickup the refreshments that are to be served at area Blood Drives and deliver them to the sites. Some lifting is involved. This position requires a two to three hour commitment each time. Days and times vary.

Shuttle Drivers are needed to drive routes that include area hospitals and the Lansing Red Cross Blood Center. Drivers pick up and deliver blood products Monday or Thursday, 9:00 am to 3pm.

Military Caseworkers are volunteers that participate in a program mandated by Congress that requires dependable, responsible people to send and receive messages between servicemen and their families. The casework is done by phone from the volunteer′s home between the hours of 5:00 pm and 9:00 am. A cell phone and pager are supplied to the volunteer. Caseworkers serve one week per month. Training is provided.

Disaster Caseworkers are needed to be on-call during none office hours. Case workers handle small disasters such as house fires, by helping those who are effected secure food and shelter until the Red Cross office opens. Cell phone and pager are supplied by the Red Cross. Hours are the same as for a military caseworker (above). Disaster volunteers are also needed as team members for responses to larger scale disasters.

VA Red Cross Coffee Program needs volunteer positions at the VA Medical Center. These workers serve coffee and cookies to veterans waiting for medical appointments. Weekday mornings, 4 hour shifts. The VA Medical Center offers a variety of other opportunities to the Red Cross volunteers.

Health and Safety volunteers can learn and progress to teaching CPR & First Aid. Cleaning CPR manikins, packing up class supplies and loading vans are all positions available at the Red Cross. Data Entry is also a job a qualified volunteer can do in the Health and Safety department. Hours are flexible and training will be provided.

Red Cross Chapter House provides many opportunities for those who like to volunteer. Class preparation, special projects, general maintenance, office work, and many other tasks are available to assist the operation. Hours are flexible and training is provided.
Volunteers are needed to answer the phone, greet visitors, take messages, make calls to remind & sign up blood donors, give information about classes, and perform various other duties at the Chapter House. A friendly voice, warm smile and pleasant personality are essential. Training provided. Weekdays, 4 Hour shifts.

Volunteers to staff the Inpatient Desk are needed at Battle Creek Health System. Tasks include: running errands for the lab, pharmacy, and other departments; delivering mail and flowers; and admitting and discharging patients. Weekdays, 4 hour shifts.
