Therapeutic Apheresis

 

Therapeutic Apheresis Service is available by the American Red Cross, Mid-Atlantic Blood Services Region. This service is available Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and as needed for emergencies after 4:00 p.m., holidays and weekends.

Some of the procedures, which are available through this service include:


Therapeutic Plasma Exchanges
Cell Reductions (White Cells and Platelets)
Red Cell Exchanges
Stem Cell Collections
Prosorba Column Treatments

 

To schedule a procedure during routine working hours call 668-3708.

After hours, weekends and holidays call 446-7795 and ask for the therapeutic nurse on-call.

Scheduling A Therapeutic Apheresis Procedure:

1. Call American Red Cross Therapeutic Apheresis Unit
2.
Ensure written order is on the patient chart and includes:
Name of procedure requested
Type of replacement fluid to be utilized
Number of procedures ordered, i.e., daily for 3 days and start date
3. Hospital consent on chart.
4. Determine if venous access is adequate for large gauge needle (16). If not, physician must schedule catheter placement (large double lumen).
5. Order must be on the chart from the physician who inserts catheter stating placement is confirmed and it is okay to use for apheresis procedure(s).
