Medical Transportation Program
Unique to Red Cross chapters in our area is CNCC’s Medical Transportation Program. Our department was started in 1921 and has served the critical needs of hundreds of thousands of persons for almost 90 years! The department currently provides point-to-point car service to and from medical appointments for clients without ready access to transportation.
Many patients who need chemotherapy, dialysis and other critical medical help are elderly, alone, and unable to drive to their medical appointments. Without the help of the Red Cross, most would have gone without treatment.
A team of dedicated Red Cross volunteers uses our vehicles to transport patients in our community to and from their destinations for medical services.
During 2007-2008 alone, volunteer drivers provided more than 6,500 clients with 12,000 one-way trips to medical appointments, logging more than 128,000 miles.

"We are extremely grateful to Merck for this generous gift supporting one of our most important services to the community," said Toby Barfield, Chapter Executive. "With the addition of these two newer, fuel-efficient cars, we hope to serve even more individuals who lack transportation of their own to medical appointments." Said Merck Public Affairs Director, Agnes Speight, "We are pleased to support this important program that provides a much needed service to so many people in Durham. I look forward to seeing these cars on the road," said Speight. The Merck Company Foundation is a U.S. based, private charitable foundation of Merck & Co. Inc., a pharmaceutical company. Since its establishment, the foundation has donated more than $524 million.
