Georgetown and Horry County
Chapters Merge to Form the New
SC Coastal Chapter of the American Red Cross
On Friday, July 1st, the Georgetown and Horry County Red Cross chapters merged into the S.C. Coastal Chapter. Sandra Quinn, director of the Georgetown chapter, will serve as director of the Georgetown Service Center. Angela Nicholas, former Horry County Red Cross director, will be executive director of the Coastal Chapter.
The merger will improve services by pooling financial and human resources from both chapters, thus making the operation more efficient. The chapter will continue to provide services to Williamsburg County. Williamsburg is classified as a “service delivery area” but provides a large share of manpower to the local Red Cross chapter.
Other chapter mergers have taken place across the state this year. The chapters in Greenville, Greenwood and Abbeville became the Upstate Chapter of the Red Cross in November. Declining donor dollars and an increased need for services has prompted the American Red Cross to trim the number of chapters nationwide from about 1,200 to about 830 in the past 10 years.
