| All disaster
volunteers need to take the following three classes in order to proceed
into more advanced training: Introduction to Disaster Services, Mass
Care An Overview, and Fulfilling Our Mission.
Introduction to
Disaster Services:
This course is a pre-requisite to all other disaster training and
can be completed as a self-study.
Participants receive
information about disasters, the community response, and the role of Red
Cross Disaster Services. Introduction to Disaster can be taken online by
going to
http://www.redcross.org/flash/course01_v01/.
Once you have completed this online introduction, please contact the
disaster services department at 583-8000 to advise a staff member you
have completed this class in order to receive credit. A card will be
mailed to you at the end of the month.
Mass Care An Overview
Mass Care An Overview and Fulfilling
Our Mission can both be scheduled during the day by calling our
disaster services staff at 583-8000. Look in the volunteer newsletter
for future evening opportunities to obtain these classes.
Fulfilling
Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion Into
Community Action
(2 hours)
Description: Introduces potential disaster volunteers and members
of other local agencies to the role of the Red Cross in the community's
actions in preparing for, responding to and recovering from emergencies
and disaster. Required for all volunteers.

Shelter
Operations:
(3 1/2 hours)
Description: Prepares volunteers and employees of the Red
Cross and other agencies to manage shelter operations effectively
and sensitively as a team while meeting the needs of people
displaced as a result of disaster. Prerequisite: Mass Care
(please call 864-583-8000 for more information regarding Mass Care
training.)

Client Casework and Disaster Action Team (DAT):
(4 hours)
Description: Client Casework trains
Red Cross workers to conduct effective client interviews and provide
appropriate assistance to help meet a client’s immediate
disaster-caused or disaster-aggravated needs.
DAT provides training and
information for participants to become “On-the-scene responders”
to provide relief assistance to individuals and families affected by
a disaster, i.e. single/multi family house fire. Train to be a DAT member and take call on a rotating
basis for your local community. Prerequisite: Fulfilling Our
Mission

Monthly Meeting Disaster Committee:
The Piedmont Chapter's Disaster Committee meets the second Tuesday of
every month from 5:30-630 pm at the Spartanburg County Office.
Disaster planning and exercises help to prepare the Chapter in the event
of a local disaster. The Disaster Committee needs individuals from
Spartanburg, Cherokee, and Union counties who are willing to invest
their time and talents preparing to help those in need.
