Volunteer

Every day, the York-Poquoson Chapter of the American Red Cross works to help people in emergencies . . . whether it's helping victims of disasters, providing health and safety training, or collecting blood for those in need.

Volunteers constitute 97 percent of the total workforce of the American Red Cross. Our vital work is made possible by people like you, who know how good it can feel to lend a helping hand. Red Cross "local heroes" come from all walks of life, and are all ages. The only requirement is a desire to help.

You are needed by the Red Cross right now.

Every year, the York-Poquoson Chapter is there for families forced from their homes by fire or other disasters. We work to prevent, prepare for, and respond to disaster incidents in our community. Last year, over 5000 local citizens turned to us to learn first aid, CPR, swimming and water safety, and other health and safety skills. Nearly half the nation's total blood supply is collected by Red Cross volunteers, including over 2,600 units of blood collected by the York-Poquoson Chapter. Among our emergency services for the men and women of the armed forces is the delivery of urgent family messages - 87 times in fiscal year 2001 alone. Volunteers serve as members of the Chapter Board of Directors, providing guidance and direction. Local volunteers also support regional and national efforts when major disasters occur.

Be one of our local heroes; don't wait another day to find out how good it feels to wear the Red Cross emblem. Print and fill out the volunteer application and send it to us right now to start helping your neighbors and your community.

Disaster Services Volunteers Needed

Help assist with local disasters in our community, ranging from single family fires to local larger scale disasters. With the proper training, provided by the American Red Cross, you will be eligible to assist with regional and national disasters.

Instructors Needed

Help teach important skills to the community. We'll provide instructor training to certify you to teach CPR, first aid, babysitting, or any of our other Health and Safety classes. Help your neighbors learn to help themselves by being a Red Cross instructor.

Committe Members Needed

Positions are available on several Board of Directors committees. Committee members need not be on the Chapter Board of Directors to participate in committee discussions and recommendations. Chapter committees include Service Delivery, Property Management, Finance, Human Resources, and a new Information Systems committee. Help shape the future and activities of the York-Poquoson Chapter. Be a committee volunteer.
